DESCRIPTION: This solidly built, unique, semi-circular structure brings the panoramic view of the earth and sky into stunning focus. The view, as one enters the home, is simply breathtaking. Redondo mountain peak rises to almost 12,000 feet in the distance in one direction, the canyon unfolds to the north, east and south. The stars are absolutely brilliant in the night sky and to witness the moon rise over the canyon wall is, well, no words. The home, built on 3.7 acres, is mostly surrounded by National Forest, and is situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The multi-level house features 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and has a large great room/dining room/kitchen at the entry level, a loft serves as a bedroom or quiet room on the upper level and has the feel of an airborne kiva. The bedrooms and bath are on the lower level. The bath has a 5'X5' window which can offer a wonderful view of the canyon or stars at night for an incomparable experience. (An optional screen for privacy is also installed).
Each level to the house has access to large decks which offer spectacular views of San Diego Canyon with its multicolored rock formations, trees and earth of many colors. And there are frequent rainbows in the late summer that go from one side of the canyon to the other side.
THE HOUSE SNUGGLED INTO THE CANYON WITH A RAINBOW
Updated in 2001 with top of line ceramic tile floors designed and installed by an artisan, 7' x 4' granite island* with Silestone double sinks, top of line faucets/fixtures and appliances, quiet dishwasher, microwave, oven/range (either gas or electric), refrigerator, stackable full size washer and dryer. Excellent upgraded carpet in bedrooms. Wooden mini-blinds in bedrooms and on glass doors. Wonderful tile work in bathroom. Kitchen and bath cabinetry are handcrafted of cherry wood and/or birch. *The granite island has a built in lighted, glass, display cabinet.
Vaulted, knotty pine, exposed, beamed ceiling with ceiling fans and track lighting grace the main and third level. A unique curved wooden beam serves as a focal point of the ceiling at the circular entryway. The unique stone/concrete core is surrounded by a stairway to the lower level styled in the Anasazi tradition of the kiva. This core anchors the house solidly to the mountain.
Passive solar heats the house with specially designed adobe trombe walls and for natural ventilation - open the windows to cool the house when needed. There is almost always a breeze.
There is propane forced heat (the propane tank is buried) and a wood burning stove which can serve as backup heating or for ambiance. We leave the thermostat at 55-60° most of the time.
MISCELLANEOUS: A dish satellite is installed and DSL has recently become available in the area. There is a built in storage area with access from the outside for tools and equipment. The Pro Panel roof has a long term guarantee and a rain catchment system would be easy to install. Outdoor trim and decks were repainted or stained recently. The exterior wall surface is colored treated, low maintenance stucco. A parking area has been created off the driveway. Preliminary drawings are available to add an additional section to the house for an even more panoramic view.

THE HOUSE SHOWING
THE CANYON SIDE, VIEWED FROM THE NE, LT. SNOW
LANDSCAPING: Surrounding the house are established native or xeriscape plants (meaning little water and maintenance required), stone walkways, rock gardens and stone retainer walls. Driveway and walkways are of pebble stone. There are abundant natural wildflowers, a lone Aspen tree, cacti, and grasses that grow throughout the property. Several large trees and boulders also lend their beauty in any season.
HISTORY OF THE HOUSE: The home was designed and lived in by Mark Feldman, a well known Albuquerque designer/builder as his personal vacation home in 1992. Mark has built many quality homes in New Mexico and especially in the Jemez Springs area. This and other of his homes have been featured in several publications, New Mexico Magazine, April 1996* and Su Casa Magazine, Spring, 2005*. Mark's specialty is building homes to conform to distinctly challenging environments that are aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. *Copies of the magazine articles are available upon request.
Although we live in Texas, we have been in the Jemez area since 1992. We bought this vacation home in 2001 and are currently building another home a half mile further up Rock Drive and are planning to move shortly. We are never disappointed by the welcoming freshness and beauty of the land and the connections with our friends here.
CLIMATE: The low humidity makes the air feel much less cold in winter, and less hot in summer. The temperatures year round are a nice change of pace from most parts of the country, whatever the season. June is considered the hottest month, and even then the nights cool to the 60's. Brief, late afternoon rains begin in July and continue until September. Each season is spectacular. Snowfall is minimal and makes for easy access along the well maintained Sandoval County road.
JEMEZ AREA: The Jemez Springs area offers close proximity to Santa Fe, Albuquerque (both approximately an hour fifteen minute drive), Taos, Abiquiu, Los Alamos, Espanola and nine Pueblo Nations. The Walatowa Pueblo, south of Jemez Springs village, offers visitors a chance to view dances on certain feast days (no photos please) and there is an interesting display about the history of the area. There is a lovely, daybreak Christmas celebration and dance on Christmas morning at the Pueblo and then follows a feast in honor of baby Jesus at a Pueblo resident's home which is an ongoing experience for 12 days.
The village of Jemez Springs is nestled into a canyon surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest. The village offers a glimpse into its history through its architecture. You will find restaurants, churches and other places of worship of differing faiths, galleries and shops, the famous hot mineral springs - Jemez Springs Bath House, and the infamous Los Ojos saloon. Local water and electric co-op furnish utilities to the home. Other services available are a local health clinic, emergency fire and police, and a veterinarian. There is a very good library which is currently being expanded. The village is a 7 minute drive from the property.

THE HOUSE AND FRONT DOOR, VIEWED FROM THE DRIVEWAY
Relaxation and hiking are our priorities. And, we love to observe the varied wildlife and many varieties of birds. Hummingbirds are happily buzzing around from May-Sept. There are many scenic drives and out of the way mountain and valley roads and hiking trails, streams and meadows, mountain climbing, biking, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, caving, wildflowers, Jemez river for fishing or meandering, Valles Caldera National Preserve, and the Bandelier National Monument offers a glimpse into the history of the area and the Anasazi cliff dwelling way of life. There are other attractions including - Gillman Tunnels, Soda Dam, Jemez waterfalls, Fenton Lake and more.
Natural hot springs are a distinct feature of the area and several are an easy hike. Some people report feeling better after lounging in the warm water of the mineral springs.
There is a diversity of people and activities in the Jemez area so you can choose to participate at whatever level you are comfortable (or not). Should you choose, there is time for community and cultural events, art shows, parades and visiting or volunteering with friendly folks. There are many local writers, potters, sculptors, artists and others involved in creative endeavors. By living in the Jemez, one has access to a wide range of activities. Everyone who has ever visited the area is awed by the inability of a photo to do justice to the beauty of the area.
Many extras are in this low maintenance, energy efficient, well cared for vacation home. Most furniture and all appliances are negotiable should you chose to have them remain.
