Profession
Jan Studebaker
retired on July 1, 2003 after almost 40 years with the
Los
Alamos National Laboratory. Jan
was a physics technician with a strong background
in analog electronics, computers, web development, computer security,
lasers, x-ray systems, optics, accelerators, digital
imaging, and diagnostics development. Details about his
professional career are available here.

No, I've never been bitten!
Outdoor
Activities
Jan has always loved the
outdoors, where his favorite activities are
mountain biking, downhill and cross
country skiing, canyoneering, backpacking,
mountaineering, trail running, and hiking. He
recently gave up rock and ice climbing due to a back
injury. Jan's transition to a non-climber was
not easy, but is now complete! His favorite
partner is now Cosima, but he often thinks of his long
term climbing partners Norbert Ensslin, Roger Rumsey,
Peter Walsh, and Elizabeth Kelly.
He participates in many
activities of the
Los Alamos Mountaineers,
where he is the club's long time webmaster, and
past:
president, vice-president, climbing school director,
climbing school instructor (many years), rescue
director (2 years), equipment manager (2 years),
and board member-at-large (2 years). He has been
given honorary "Lifetime Member" status,
and he is a recipient of the the clubs "Distinguished
Service Award". In addition to all that, he
has lead several hundred trips of all descriptions for
club members and friends.
Photography
and Art
Photography
has come of age with the digital camera. Jan enjoys
recording many of his and Cosima's activities.

One
of Jan's latest joys is his venture into the
digital
caricature.
If you also enjoy this art form, let Jan take a photograph
of you, or send him one, and you may be rewarded!
Digital images are best! Jan will take care of
the details. Seeing is believing......8X10's are available.

Web
Design Projects
Jan
enjoys web design, and actively acts as webmaster for
several sites. This particular activity is more
of a hobby than a business, because it takes so much
time from his other interests. None the less,
he finds it terribly gratifying! Visit the
Jemez Web Factory for examples, and more information.
Volunteer Activities
Jan likes to keep busy, so he
always has supplemented his activities with one or
more volunteer activities. Currently, his most
important volunteer activity is with the Greater
Eastern Jemez Wildland Urban Interface Corporation where
he is an officer of the board as well as their
webmaster.
GEJWUIC is a non-profit
corporation that is helping interested Jemez residents
create
Firewise personal property by actively soliciting,
obtaining , and distributing New Mexico state grant
money for Jemez property owners.
